Io Capitano follows two teenage boys, Seydou and Moussa, who leave Senegal dreaming of a better future in Europe. What begins as an adventure fuelled by hope quickly turns into a harrowing journey through deserts, prisons, exploitation, and violence.
Rather than framing migration as an abstract crisis, the film insists on its human reality. Told largely from the perspective of Seydou, audiences witness the loss of innocence, the moral compromises forced by survival, and the endurance required to keep moving forward.
With a runtime of 121 minutes, the film is both epic and intimate, blending realism with moments of dreamlike symbolism. Director Matteo Garrone creates a powerful cinematic experience that confronts viewers with the true cost of borders.
A post-film chat at Circle Screening is available for audiences who wish to unpack the film’s themes and emotional impact together.
