Ray - Screening, discussion & fund raising

Venue: The Circle | 6 Market St, Newport, NP20 1FU

Friday 28th November @ 6.15pm doors open.

Ray is more than a biopic; it is a tribute to the life and music of Ray Charles, a man who transformed the world of gospel, soul, and rhythm and blues. From his early days singing in church choirs to his groundbreaking recordings, Ray’s music carried the weight of struggle, hope, and triumph. The film captures his genius in blending the spiritual intensity of gospel with the deep emotional power of soul, creating a sound that spoke to hearts across generations. His journey reflects not only artistic brilliance but also resilience in the face of personal and societal challenges. As we watch Ray, we are reminded of the profound influence of gospel music on modern soul and popular music. The film offers an opportunity to reflect on how faith, community, and musical innovation shaped his voice and vision.

The screening will be followed by a discussion on the enduring impact of gospel music, its roots, and its role in inspiring both artists and audiences worldwide. The ticket price is only £1 and anything you pay on top at the checkout will go toward providing much-needed aid and relief in Jamaica, with heartfelt thanks to Caribbean Heritage, Urban Circle, and the Rastafari community of Montego Bay for their support and spirit of unity. As well as DARPLE and Taith Cymru.

Supported by Film Hub Wales as part of the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN), made possible by the National Lottery.
