About Course

Currently, in Wales and the rest of the UK, our communities are being challenged by divisive racial dynamics, inequalities and divisions which run through our schools and classrooms. As reported by the Diversity and Anti-Racist Professional Learning Organisation (DARPL), systemic racism is so deeply rooted in our history, culture, and institutions that there is no denying that to date, we have failed in changing the messages about ‘what matters’ in our learning communities. In 2021, the Equality & Human Rights Commission published research showing that the reporting of racially motivated hate crimes had risen by 73% since 2019. Yet, discussions of racism are typically not part of our curriculum unless through teaching social sciences, or literature, or highlighting a particular news item or short-lived campaign in a school assembly.

In their final 2021 report into Black, Asian & Ethnic Minority Communities; ‘Contributions and

Cynefin in the New Curriculum Working Group’ DARPL concluded that, “The attainment of children and young people from some Minority communities is being hampered by a curriculum that has failed to represent their histories, and the contributions of their communities, past and present. They are hampered by the lack of positive role models in an education workforce that does not adequately reflect the ethnically diverse profile of Wales, and they are hampered by experiences of racism in their everyday school life. This must change”(DARPL, 2021, p4)

In seeking to bring about such social change referenced above – Brave Space Resources introduces “The Untold Curriculum Told,” a potent educational resource pack developed by Urban Circle Newport in partnership with diverse communities experienced in addressing racism and intercultural development. This resource is unique because it’s primarily shaped by ethnic minorities, valuing their lived experiences as its central ethos, aligning with the 2022 Wales Anti-racist Action Plan.

DARPLE COURSE INFORMATION

The Context:

The resource is based on elements of the award-winning educational documentary “HUMANiTREE: A Story of Us Humans, from the Roots to the fruit across the Globe” and also the “Wales Untold: People, Power and Industry” two films produced by Urban Circle Newport and BlackNine Films. The accompanying framework and resource pack which sits alongside the film, enables educators and learners to discuss and explore their personal perspectives on religious and non-religious worldviews, ethical challenges, and social inclusion issues.

The documentary films “HumaniTree and Wales Untold” provide an opportunity to explore the natural world, human history, and social issues locally and globally, fostering learners’ sense of belonging and well-being. Utilising these resources can boost resilience, independence, self-confidence, and self-esteem, nurturing healthy, confident individuals ready for fulfilling societal roles, as outlined in the 2021 Wales Curriculum Goals.
