A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
Dir. Ana Lily Amirpour
USA | Persian with English subtitles | 101 mins | Certificate 15

On the night before Halloween, enter Bad City.

The streets are almost empty. Oil pumps move in the distance. Music drifts through bedrooms, cars and underground clubs.

And after dark, a young woman in a chador walks alone through the city.

She is also a vampire.

Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night takes one of cinema’s oldest monsters and turns the vampire film into something completely unexpected. Part horror film, part western, part romance and part graphic novel, it is a strange, stylish and haunting journey through a world of outsiders, predators and lonely people searching for connection. And somewhere in the middle of it all is a skateboard.

NOT YOUR USUAL HALLOWEEN FILM

There are no haunted houses or masked killers here. Instead, Amirpour gives us a vampire who quietly stalks the streets of Bad City, watching the people around her and deciding who deserves her attention.

The film immediately plays with one familiar idea: a girl walking home alone at night should be afraid.

But here, the Girl may be the person everyone else should fear. Her chador becomes part veil, part cape and part classic vampire silhouette. That reversal gives the film much of its unsettling power.

Who is vulnerable?

Who is dangerous?

And who gets to decide?

WHY WE PROGRAMMED IT
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is perfect for Halloween precisely because it refuses to behave like an ordinary horror film. It borrows from vampire cinema, film noir and spaghetti westerns, but also explores loneliness, desire, gender, identity and belonging.

Bad City looks like Iran, America, an old western town and somewhere that exists only in cinema, sometimes all at once.

The result is a film that feels familiar and completely new.

LOOK
Shot in striking black and white, the film creates its atmosphere through shadows, empty streets, faces, long silences, oil fields, the Girl’s chador moving through the frame, and one of cinema’s coolest vampire images: the Girl riding a skateboard through the night.

Notice how often the film uses space and silence rather than dialogue to tell us what its characters are feeling.

LISTEN
Music is central to Bad City. Iranian rock, post-punk, electronic music and sounds inspired by westerns move through the film, sometimes revealing more about the characters than their conversations do. One of the film’s most memorable romantic moments is built almost entirely around music, bodies and silence.

Listen to what happens when Amirpour moves between sound and silence, distance and intimacy.
