Two siblings running a horse ranch in California discover something wonderful (and sinister) in the skies above them. While OJ and Emerald Haywood try to capture evidence of what they have seen, the owner of a nearby theme park sees another opportunity: turn the impossible into entertainment.

Following Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele takes the spectacle of the Hollywood UFO movie and looks at it from a very different perspective. At the centre are a Black brother and sister whose family history is connected to one of the earliest moving images ever made: Eadweard Muybridge’s famous photographs of a horse and rider.

The horse became part of cinema history. The Black jockey did not.

WHO GETS REMEMBERED?

That apparently small detail becomes one of the keys to Nope. Who creates the images that become part of our culture? Who gets credited? And who disappears from the story?

WATCH THE TRAILER

OJ and Emerald are also trying to do something very contemporary: get the shot.

If something unbelievable appeared in the sky, would you simply watch it, or would you immediately reach for your phone?

Nope is fascinated by our desire to turn extraordinary experiences into images: something to record, upload, share, sell and watch again. Peele connects Hollywood spectacle with a world of viral clips, social media and the pressure to capture everything.

LISTEN

Sound designer Johnnie Burn created much of its tension not through the obvious sound of a monster, but by subtly changing the world around it: wind, distant voices, movement across the landscape and sounds that are just strange enough to make us uncomfortable.

What we cannot see becomes frightening because we start imagining it ourselves.

BEHIND THE SOUND OF NOPE

For young filmmakers: listen to how sound can tell us what is happening outside the frame before an image ever shows us.

Johnnie Burn on creating the sound world of Nope

This is a substantial interview with Burn about designing the film’s soundscape, including the wind, environmental disturbances, Jean Jacket and the Dolby Atmos mix. It contains scene-specific spoilers, so your warning is appropriate.

Cinematography
How do you film a UFO? – NOPE Cinematography Breakdown

This is a roughly seven-minute video essay on Hoyte van Hoytema’s cinematography, IMAX and the problem of photographing the apparently unphotographable.

Funny, frightening and visually spectacular, Nope is simultaneously a sci-fi movie, a horror film, a western and a film about filmmaking itself.

For Black History Month, it also asks an important question:

Who gets to make the image, and who gets remembered once that image becomes history?
