Sean Baker’s Tangerine (2015) follows Sin-Dee Rella, a transgender sex worker who returns to her Los Angeles neighbourhood on Christmas Eve and discovers that her boyfriend and pimp, Chester, has been unfaithful. With her best friend Alexandra, she sets off across the city to find him.

What begins as a furious search becomes a funny, energetic and unexpectedly tender portrait of friendship, betrayal and survival. Sin-Dee and Alexandra may argue and frustrate one another, but their relationship gives the film its emotional heart.

Tangerine places transgender women, sex workers and people often pushed to the margins firmly at the centre of the screen. Its characters are allowed to be complicated, joyful, angry, vulnerable and funny rather than defined only by hardship.

The film is also famous for the way it was made. Baker and his collaborators shot it using three iPhone 5s phones, turning accessible technology and a limited budget into bold, saturated and strikingly cinematic images.

At once a comedy, friendship story and vivid portrait of Los Angeles, Tangerine invites us to think about representation, loyalty, discrimination and who cinema chooses to place at the centre of its stories.

The screening will be followed by an informal audience conversation about the film, its characters and the creative possibilities of making films with accessible technology.

BEFORE TANGERINE: TWO SHORT FILMS BY TEEJAY OLAKOJO

Before the main feature, we are delighted to present Àjọkẹ́ and Façade, two short films by Wales-based filmmaker and performer Teejay Olakojo, who will join us in person to introduce her work and take part in the audience conversation.

Together with Tangerine, the shorts explore identity, visibility, performance and the tension between how others see us and how we define ourselves.

Àjọkẹ́
UK, 2026 | 6 minutes 28 seconds | English

An autobiographical short film about a Nigerian model in the UK whose confidence is shaken when a powerful fashion agent rejects her body, beauty and identity.

Through ancestral praise, ritualistic movement and self-remembrance, Àjọkẹ́ confronts the pain of being reduced and misjudged and begins to reclaim beauty, power and identity on her own terms.

Façade
UK, 2023 | 5 minutes 53 seconds | English

Cardiff entertainer Eva dazzles audiences with her sold-out one-woman shows and is recognised wherever she goes. But when the curtain falls and the cameras stop clicking, another story emerges.

In this personal monologue, Eva looks beneath her glamorous public image to reveal the experiences of an African immigrant artist working within a white-dominated industry.

The world sees an icon. She sees a façade.

Meet the filmmaker: Teejay Olakojo

Teejay Olakojo is an actor, writer, producer and director based in Wales. Working across film, theatre, movement, fashion and cultural production, her creative practice explores identity, beauty, displacement, transformation and representation.

Teejay will join us in person on 4 September to introduce Àjọkẹ́ and Façade and take part in an informal audience conversation following the screenings.

Join us for an evening of three distinctive films exploring friendship, identity, visibility and the power of taking control of how our stories are told.
