MOONLIGHT
Friday 23 October 2026
Directed by Barry Jenkins | USA | 2016 | 112 mins | Certificate 15
Growing up in Miami, Chiron is quiet, isolated and struggling to find his place. Bullied at school and living with a mother affected by addiction, he finds unexpected care in Juan, a local drug dealer who becomes a father figure. Told across three stages of Chiron’s life, Moonlight explores masculinity, sexuality, friendship, family and the different selves we build in order to survive.
Barry Jenkins tells Chiron’s story through colour, music, silence and intimate performances. Deep blues, tropical greens and intense pinks give the film a visual richness rarely associated with stories about poverty and marginalisation.
Why Moonlight?
For the final film in our Black History Month programme, we wanted to make space for a Black queer story centred not only on struggle. Moonlight asks what happens when someone grows up feeling that parts of themselves must remain hidden, and whether it is ever too late to reconnect with who they really are.
This screening is open to everyone, with a particular welcome to young people aged 15+, Black audiences and LGBTQ+ audiences.
