Why We're Launching Makers Markets at CIRCLE

Across Newport and beyond, independent makers, artists, freelancers and small creative businesses are facing increasing challenges. Rising costs, changing high streets and limited opportunities to showcase and sell their work mean that many talented people are finding it harder than ever to build sustainable creative livelihoods.

At Urban Circle, we believe local creativity should be valued, supported and celebrated. That's why we're launching Makers Markets at CIRCLE this summer – creating a space where local artists, crafters, writers, poets and creative traders can connect directly with audiences, share their work and generate income within their own community.

The idea was inspired in part by what members of the Urban Circle team experienced while visiting Kingston, Jamaica. There, vibrant evening creative markets transformed public spaces into hubs of culture, enterprise and connection. These weren't simply places to buy and sell products; they were spaces where communities gathered, stories were shared and local economies thrived through creativity.

That experience reinforced something we've long believed: a strong local economy depends on keeping value circulating locally. Every purchase from an independent maker, every commission for a local artist and every investment in a community business helps build a more resilient and sustainable economy. This is circular economy thinking in action – supporting local talent, reducing reliance on distant supply chains and ensuring wealth remains within the places where it is created.

Our Makers Markets are designed with a different feel to traditional daytime markets. Running from 2pm until late, they offer an after-hours atmosphere with music, spoken word, workshops, food and drink alongside stalls and exhibitions. They're a chance to discover unique local talent, meet the people behind the work and experience Newport's creative community in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

The markets also form part of UC20, our year-long programme celebrating 20 years of Urban Circle Newport. As we reflect on two decades of supporting creativity, culture and community, we're proud to continue creating opportunities for the next generation of makers, artists and creative entrepreneurs.

Join us at CIRCLE on 28 June, 19 July and 16 August, and help support the people who make our local creative economy possible.
